History of Algebra
Arithmetic loosely speaking is the science of numbers involving the arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. Having defined arithmetic, we now trace a brief history of how it evolved.
Arithmetic was the first and most basic branch of mathematics to emerge from daily activities among people in the earliest society. No great names are associated with its creation nor was arithmetic recognized as an intellectual enterprise when it began as purely practical mental device some millennia before the Christian era. In evolving from its limited initial role as a method of counting and keeping records of transactions to the “mathematics” we now call “arithmetic”, was necessary for a number system to be introduced.
History reveals that even the most primitive society had some kind of number system consisting of a collection of straight vertical lines.
